Thank you to Horus for your permission to share your wonderful artwork! Going forward, SanArt Sunday featured artists will always be contacted for permission to use their work before it is featured on social media or in site news.

Mystic Adventure Monday

Development of Santae's Mystic Adventure, an exciting upcoming game mode, is underway! Each Monday, we'll share development progress and sneak peeks at how the Mystic Adventure is progressing.

In this week's update, an exciting look behind the scenes at the first steps toward Mystic Adventure levels becoming interactive spaces: Creating maps and allowing player tokens to move around the board!

The world is dynamically built using data we store in a 2D Array, allowing us to change anything on it "on the fly" during development for testing. In the future we're planning to have this download the map layout from the database, allowing us to create tools to create more levels without needing to edit the code of the game. This is a future plan for now while we get the base mechanics working 🙂

While working on allowing the player tokens to move around the board, we've programmed a simple NPC that simply has the rules:

- When it is it's turn, roll a 1 sided die (so they can only travel one tile while we're in testing mode)
- Move my token that number of tiles (currently limited to 1)
- Mark the turn as completed and pass the turn to the next player
- Each player may only move their token onto tiles configured as "walkable" - this includes the path tiles and the two types of bridges.

We've set the game to run with 4 NPCs and just like that, we can watch them each taking their turn and moving independently around the board.

Of course there are no objectives yet, no items to collect, no rewards to work towards, and in the full game we intend for there to be animations and all sorts of shiny things such as minigames to play in between each turn. However, this is  a great start! The thing to note is that the tokens are adhering to the rules and remaining exclusively on the pathing which means the basic rules we have set up are working.

The next step is to change them to animate/transition to their target tile, followed by also allowing the human player to select which tiles they wish to move to when it is their turn.

Watch out for Mystic Monday next week where we'll hopefully be able to showcase progress towards that!

TL;DR

The Coloring Contest has begun! Copy the transparent lineart from above or download the .psds (Direfang, Phasmic, Velarie, Xyren). Use the Contest Submission Page to submit your entry when it is ready.
