Masters Of The Winds And Storms

After examining the materials in the library, Vespera and River went back outside to enjoy the fresh evening air in Halo Haven. They stood on a sheltered overlook, gazing out across the magnificent landscape before them.

From all the way up here, Vespera could see the land of Aleriea laid out like a patchwork quilt below. The Harmonic Heartwoods were a thick blanket of green leaves cut by brown cliffs. The Flamefall Cascades were a dark expanse traced by glowing streams of hot orange lava. More distant lands faded into the mist of the horizon, blending with the clouds that soared high up into the sky.

"It's so beautiful up here," Vespera remarked. A stiff breeze was picking up, ruffling her hair and River's crest of feathers. The wind carried a faint chill with it as it swept the towering clouds across the sky.

"It is." Scholar Orion's voice surprised Vespera. The old academic had walked out to join her on the overlook. "Our place in the sky gives us access to many wonders you can't experience on the ground below," Orion said, "but it comes with its dangers, as well."

"What do you mean?" Vespera asked, curious.

"Feel this wind?" Orion raised one hand to feel the intensifying gale. "I expect it will only get more intense. These skies are home to many legendary creatures of the air. By the looks of it, some of them are soon to visit."

"Legendary creatures? I couldn't possibly miss that!" Vespera grinned.

"I can see that you are determined," Orion replied. "You should be safe enough. Just remember to seek shelter if the storms become too intense." With a parting nod, Orion retreated back inside the library.

Vespera and River stayed to watch the sky as the winds continued to grow stronger and stronger, whistling past the islands of Halo Haven and making the floating halo-like hoops above each building quiver. The clouds swept by faster and faster, driven like a river before the gale. Vespera felt River's claws grip her shoulder tightly as the Raylen fought to stay securely perched.

Then -- she saw it! A flicker of movement even faster than the flow of the cloudscape. A birdlike Minimal, its feathers sporting the same blue-gray-white hues of the turbulent sky, was flying overhead at incredible speed!

With a flick of its long, bannerlike tail, the Minimal sent a current of air eddying across the sky. Vespera could see the windstorm given shape by the wisps of cloud spiraling around the Minimal as it soared past.

The clouds were thick and dark now, gathered up by the winds summoned by the long-tailed bird. Vespera felt a single cool drop of rain strike her as the sky rumbled with thunder overhead, threatening a storm.

Vespera gasped. High, high above -- higher even than the wind-summoning bird was flying -- a spark of electric blue light flashed into view. It zipped downwards in a dive, faster and faster, closer and closer!

Finally, it was close enough for Vespera to see. It was another bird with stormy blue feathers, trailing a bolt of lightning in its wake as it swept toward the earth. Thunder crashed all around as the storm intensified in the bird's wake.

The rain fell harder and harder as lightning flashed. Vespera and River were almost instantly soaked to the skin by the sudden squall of weather, but Vespera was thrilled. She had rarely seen creatures so powerful and exciting, and she was in no danger of being swept into the sky from her sturdy perch on the overlook.

At first, it seemed like the high winds and stormy weather would last into the evening -- but then, almost as quickly as they arrived, they started to disappear. A narrow seam of light opened up in the sky overhead, sending a sunbeam down to bathe Vespera and River in warmth.

Vespera shaded her eyes and looked up. The patch of calm weather was traveling and widening, as though a curtain was being pulled across the sky and sweeping the storm away. Gazing closer, Vespera was able to identify the culprit. At the leading edge of the clear patch, a third bird Minimal was soaring on outstretched wings that sparkled with dawnlike radiance. The other two had brought fearsome winds in their wake, but this Minimal was calming the skies.

As the skies finally cleared, Vespera and River watched the three bird Minimals circle together overhead. Truly the skies over Santae were full of wonders!
