The Treasure At The Bottom Of The Abyss

Rose and Eldrin were watching the waters of the Abyssal Lake intently. Eventually, a golden shape swam into view deep beneath the surface. It was Dex the Harlowin, finally returning from its expedition beneath the waves!

Dex breached the surface of the lake with a splash, the bubble of air around its head from the Pearlux's magic popping as it did so. Looking pleased with itself, Dex glanced around until it noticed Rose, and then swam over to shore with lazy sweeps of its strong tail.

"Welcome back, Dex!" Rose happily greeted her friend. "What did you find down there?"

Dex clambered out onto shore, shaking water from its scales, and brandished an Elite Pouch bulging with items.

          

"Let's see," Rose muttered, taking the Pouch and reaching inside.

She withdrew her hand and gasped. Dex had brought back a pile of beautiful crystals! Rose turned one back and forth to watch the light sparkle off of its gleaming facets. The depths of the crystalline gems were the deep violet of the sky at dusk, but the edges gleamed with the pale peach and gold of sunrise.

"It can't be..." Rose heard Eldrin exclaim behind her. The Seeker of Knowledge walked closer, extending his hand. "May I please see that?"

Rose handed the crystal over. Eldrin held it carefully, examining it with a practiced eye.

"There's no doubt about it, although I can hardly believe it. This is Twilight Crystal," Eldrin said.

"Twilight Crystal? What's that?" Said Rose.

"I have read about this magical crystal, but I never imagined that it was waiting to be discovered below our feet this entire time! There are many ancient accounts of this ore's magical properties, but no record of how its power can actually be unlocked survives. I will need to study this Twilight Crystal more closely. We could be the first to understand its power in centuries."

"Incredible!" Rose said. "We should -- oh! What is it, Dex?" Rose interrupted herself. The Harlowin had taken the hem of Rose's robe between its teeth and was gently tugging on it to get her attention. When it saw Rose was looking, Dex gently nudged and cajoled Rose back over toward the edge of the Abyssal Lake.

Letting Rose's robe go, Dex made a pointing gesture with its snout toward the clear waters of the Lake, staring intently into the depths.

"Did you see something else down there?" Rose and Eldrin looked.

The Abyssal Monster's Slumber

The waters of the Abyssal Lake were clearer than ever after the Adventurers' cleanup. Rose and Eldrin could see straight down to the bottom, where Dex's explorations had slightly rearranged the rocks and dirt. It had revealed a line of sight into the very deepest depths that had been invisible before.

Dex was pointing directly into the newly revealed chasm. Deep down below, Rose and Eldrin caught a glimpse of shiny deep blue scales...

The Abyssal Monster was hidden at the very bottom of the Abyssal Lake!

"Your companion found the Monster?" Eldrin said. "I wonder why it is remaining all the way down there?"

Rose was looking closer. "It looks like the Monster is asleep," she said. "But that's definitely no ordinary slumber. For it to vanish for this long, and to be resting so deep underwater...I believe it must be deep in hibernation."

"So many mysteries in the depths of the Lake..." Eldrin mused. "Magical ore and slumbering monsters -- we will need the Adventurers' help to get to the bottom of all of this."

"Maybe the ore's magic will help?" Rose wondered aloud. "I think we should gather more!"
